Permitting and Licensing
Permitting F.A.Q.s
WHEN DO I NEED A PERMIT?
Athens Township requires a Zoning Permit prior to the placement, erection, construction, addition, or alteration of any building or structure; prior to the use or change in use of a building, structure, or land; prior to the demolition of any building or structure; prior to the erection or alteration of signs; prior to
the extension or change of a nonconforming use; or prior to any development in the floodplain or floodway.
A building permit is required by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania…
If you have a question as to whether a permit is required, contact the Zoning Office at (570) 888-2325 for a free consultation.
WHY DO I NEED A PERMIT?
A permit lets the Township know about your upcoming plans for work on your property. Inspections are required to ensure that all ordinances, building codes, and other requirements are being followed.
Failure to obtain a permit can result in the Township issuing a cease and desist order
WHAT IF I START THE PROJECT WITHOUT A PERMIT?
Starting work before obtaining the necessary permits could result in additional fines and/or penalties. A cease and desist order may be issued and a permit will be required before any work can resume. This process could greatly delay the completion of your project.
SIGN PERMITS
Sign Permits are required for all signage within the Township except for real estate and political signs. All signage must comply with current zoning regulations.
We encourage all businesses to contact the Zoning Office during the design phase to insure that the proposed signage will be in compliance.
